8 Steps to Chase the Winter Blues Away
Winter is fraught with dark mornings, darker evenings and here in London many chilly gray days in between. Spring seems a long way off but there are some simple steps that can help lighten your mood.
Get outdoors into some natural light. Even ten minutes outside can make a difference. Take advantage of those bright sunny days to play outside with your children, everyone will feel better and enjoy the fresh air.
Be physically active. Play with your children, walk around the block, go to the gym or dance in your living room. Make it something you enjoy.
Put the leftover Christmas goodies away and freshen up your diet. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, beans, lean meats and fish. The good news is that moderate amount of dark chocolate can be beneficial.
Even if you feel sleepy, try to stick to a regular sleep schedule. Establish a routine wake-up time and a soothing bedtime ritual.
Plan social activities. Meet a friend, go to a movie, plan a date night or make a phone call to someone important to you.
Set a mini-goal each day. Cross something off your TO DO list, clean out the junk drawer or mop the kitchen floor. It should be something small and easily attainable.
Pop some popcorn, and watch a “laugh out loud” movie with your family. Even if you think you won’t laugh, chances are you will.
Treat yourself to fresh flowers. They are beautiful, the fragrance is stimulating, and it’s a reminder that spring is coming.
It is important to pay attention to changes in mood. Talk to your health care provider about any mental health concerns.
