Dramatic Play at Home - Laundry Time

Children love to role play and act out what they see their parents doing.  Materials/toys don’t have to be complicated or expensive in order to provide hours of valuable pretend play. How about making laundry a fun play activity?

Materials

  • ·         2 Cardboard boxes

  • ·         Construction paper or paint (to decorate the front of the boxes)

  • ·         Container lids for on/off buttons

  • ·         Tin foil plate for washer door

  • ·         String or rope for clothesline

  • ·         Clothespins

  • ·         Items of clothing

  • ·         Empty detergent bottle

  •         Laundry basket

  •          Hot glue gun or strong tape and regular glue

Directions

Tie your rope between some dresser knobs or kitchen chairs (monitor well when using string or rope). Thoroughly wash and dry an empty laundry soap jug

To build a simple washer and dryer from the cardboard boxes, you can leave the fronts uncut, and let your child put the clothes into the top (open end) of the box. Use construction paper for the details on the appliances.

If you want to get a little fancier, add pie plates and knobs, and cut out doors

Add a story book for to extend the play. We recommend Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems.
