WILD CHILD: I Spy Bloodroot
One of the early spring flowers you may see on your walks is bloodroot. It has a pretty white flower of seven or more petals and big green lobed leaves which stand mostly upright.
While the leaves can have many slightly different shapes, it’s often easy to identify bloodroot because it arrives in the spring before there are too many other plants around.
The plant gets it’s name because its sap is redish-orangeish, If you find a broken leaf be sure to look at the sap.
While safe to handle, this plant is not considered edible.
